Heavy rain that has hit Central Aceh Regency, Aceh, since Sunday, September 13 afternoon triggered landslides in a number of areas. The disaster killed one resident and caused 13 others to be injured.
Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Berton SP Panjaitan said the landslide occurred at around 18.15 WIB and affected seven villages spread across four sub-districts, namely Kebayakan, Lut Tawar, Celala, and Silih Nara.
"Based on the temporary data, one resident died and 13 other residents were injured," Berton said in a statement received in Jakarta, Monday, September 14.
In addition to causing casualties, landslides also damaged a number of residents' houses. Two houses were reported to have been severely damaged and two others were moderately damaged.
Landslides and mud also closed a number of national, provincial, and district roads, disrupting public access.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Central Aceh Regency immediately carried out assessments and handling at a number of affected locations. Two heavy equipment, one wheel loader and one excavator, were deployed to clear the landslide material from the road.
As of Sunday evening, the cleaning process was still underway to reopen access to the road that was closed by the landslide material.
BNPB together with BPBD and related elements continue to monitor conditions on the ground, including anticipating the possibility of a subsequent landslide.
BNPB reminded people in Central Aceh and its surroundings to increase vigilance, especially when heavy rains last for a long time. Residents who are around slopes and cliffs are asked to immediately move away and find a safe place if they see signs of land movement.
