A flare with heavy black smoke was spotted in southeast Houston due to a power outage at the chemical plant in the TPC Group Houston Operations facility on Monday afternoon, according to the company.
TPC Group Houston Operations says that the incident happened at 8600 Park Place Boulevard at 2:51 p.m.
A heavy plume of smoke was visible on Houston TranStar cameras.
In a 4:24 p.m. update, the company says the outage affected the facility's boilers, causing the flaring. The company is currently restarting the boilers to reduce the flare's impact.
The company also said it will monitor air monitoring in and around the site.
TPC Group Houston Operations shared the following statement on Monday:
"We have made the required notifications and do not believe there to be an impact on the community. Our focus remains on safely resolving the situation. We will investigate the cause of the power outage once we have safely restored power to the facility."
