Honolulu firefighters extinguished a fire at a Waikiki high-rise building this morning.
The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call for the fire at about 8:30 a.m. near 1720 Ala Moana Boulevard. Eleven units with 41 personnel responded.
Upon arrival, firefighters found light black smoke coming from the penthouse unit and requested more help.
After securing a water supply and gaining control of the lobby and elevators, firefighters quickly began an offensive fire attack on the top floor, where the fire appeared to be within an enclosed lanai.
HFD brought the fire under control at 8:47 a.m. and fully extinguished it at 9:11 a.m.
The two residents who lived in the apartment on fire, along with three who lived in units next door, managed to evacuate on their own.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services assessed the residents for injuries, but did not appear to transport any to the hospital.
An investigation is underway to determine the fire’s cause and origin, along with estimated damages.
Police closed the road at Ala Moana and Hobron Lane for about an hour as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
