Severe flooding has swept across Cambodia’s north-western Battambang province after days of heavy rain, affecting more than 21,000 families.
Drone footage filmed on Tuesday shows large areas covered by floodwater, with homes, buildings and trees surrounded by water. Vehicles move slowly through submerged roads as residents wade through flooded streets carrying belongings in basins.
In some areas, sandbags have been placed outside buildings, including a bank entrance, in an attempt to keep water out.
For residents who have lived through previous floods, the current situation has been unusually severe.
“For more than 30 years I have lived here, only this year has the flood been this bad. Previous years were not as bad as this year,” Banan District resident Nhor Rom said.
Farms And Roads Submerged
The flooding has also caused major disruption for farmers, with orchards, rice fields and access roads covered by water.
One resident said water had reached the road leading to their orchard, making travel difficult without a tractor. The resident added that some areas had started to see water levels fall, while other locations remained flooded.
The ASEAN Disaster Information Network, citing Battambang provincial disaster authorities, reported that flooding had reached all 14 cities and districts in the province by September 27.
A total of 21,807 families had been affected, while 856 families were evacuated. The flooding also inundated 35,612 hectares of rice fields.
Heavy rain leaves communities, farms and roads under water.
Residents Seek Government Support
As families and farmers deal with damage to homes and farmland, residents have called for additional assistance.
“I would like the government to help farmers whose farms and houses were affected by the flood. Please help support them with food and essential aid,” resident Vannak said.
Authorities have been evacuating residents from affected communities and monitoring water levels as flooding continues to threaten homes, roads and agricultural land.
Prime Minister Hun Manet visited flood-hit Banteay Meanchey province on Monday, where he met affected residents as officials arranged relief measures.
Flooding Spreads Across Cambodia
The situation extends beyond Battambang. According to Cambodia’s National Committee for Disaster Management, flooding had affected 44,889 families across 10 provinces by September 27.
The committee also reported that 3,685 families had been evacuated, while almost 50,000 hectares of rice fields had been affected nationwide.
With water continuing to affect communities and farmland, authorities are carrying out evacuations and relief efforts in areas facing the greatest impact.
