A55-year-old Tunisian man is dead and a 29-year-old Bangladeshi is seriously injured after a fire broke out late on Tuesday at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, sources said on Wednesday.
The Bangladeshi is being treated at the Ancona Regional Hospital but is set to be transferred to a burns centre in Pisa, the sources said.
The two workers, employed by a subcontractor, were engulfed in flames while working on a ship.
The Fiom, Fim, and Uilm trade unions staged a protest outside the shipyard on Wednesday and have called an eight-hour strike.
Workplace deaths are a big problem in Italy.
Workplace accident insurance agency INAIL said in its annual report last week that Italy registered 1,189 work-related deaths in 2025.
Although this was 37 fewer than in 2024, a drop of 3.02%, it still means that Italy is averaging over three work-related deaths every day.
