A foreign-flagged cargo ship sank in the Black Sea following a suspected drone strike some 13 nautical miles off the Romanian port city of Constanta, Digi24 reported on Friday. One crew member has died, nine have been rescued and three remain missing, according to information released by the Romanian authorities. The vessel, identified as the Khoryv, sent out a distress signal, prompting a search-and-rescue operation involving Romanian maritime authorities. The Romanian Maritime Authority said its Maritime Coordination Centre received the distress call at around 10 a.m. local time, which is the same as Bulgarian time. The ship was outside Romania's territorial waters, approximately 13 nautical miles off Constanta, and was carrying 13 crew members, including ten Ukrainian nationals and three Azerbaijani nationals.Following the distress call, vessels from the Romanian Agency for Saving Human Life at Sea and the Interior Ministry were dispatched to the scene.
"Due to adverse weather conditions and poor visibility, conducting an aerial rescue operation by helicopter is impossible. So far, rescue teams have managed to recover nine survivors and one body from the water," the Romanian Maritime Authority said.Search-and-rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the remaining three crew members.According to the information currently available, the Khoryv is a merchant vessel sailing under the flag of the Comoros. The rescue operation is being coordinated by the Romanian Maritime Authority, with the participation of the Coast Guard and the Romanian Agency for Saving Human Life at Sea.The incident follows a series of attacks on merchant vessels in the Black Sea in recent weeks. On October 6, two commercial ships were attacked in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone. A week later, on October 13, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged HS Dignity sank after being struck approximately 17 nautical miles east of Shabla, while the Malta-flagged CHELSEA-3 was damaged in an attack approximately 17 nautical miles east of Byala.Friday's incident also came a day after a meeting of Romania's Supreme Council of National Defence, Romanian media reported.
