Paraguay - Paraguay: Chikungunya epidemic has spread throughout the country

The General Directorate of Health Surveillance, Dr. Guillermo Sequera reported this morning that in the last three weeks (Epi Weeks 8, 9 and 10), there are a total of 11,649 cases of chikungunya. The epidemiological curve is currently at a plateau, an apparent decrease in cases is observed, however, the epidemic has spread throughout the country. “The cases decreased a little in Asunción and Central, but increased in the interior of the country, we have a phase of dispersion at the national level, apart from that, we have to take into account that people are going less to health centers and they are carried out as a consequence less test for chikungunya ”, he expressed. The departments where the cases are concentrated are: Central (47%), Asunción (20%), Alto Paraná (8%), Amambay (4%), Paraguarí (4%), Cordillera (3%), Guairá (3 %), Concepción (3%), Itapúa (2%), Presidente Hayes (2%), among others. In Central, the epicenter continues to be San Lorenzo, which in turn affects the entire metropolitan axis by becoming the distributor of the disease. “Most of the cases, today, are found in San Lorenzo and not only of chikungunya, but also the few cases of dengue,” explained the head of Health Surveillance. As for the neighborhoods of Asunción with the highest cases, they continue to be Barrio Obrero, Sajonia, San Pablo, Roberto L. Petit, and others. Regarding the most affected age group, there are people between 20 and 39 years old, with 29%, followed by 60 years and over with 22%, with a predominance in females (58%). A total of 569 confirmed cases are registered in infants, of which 87 correspond to newborns from 0 to 29 days. To date there are 51 confirmed deaths, mostly in children and adults aged 60 and over.
