Sixteen cases of legionellosis and three deaths from the disease were recorded in Lithuania in the first four months of this year, the country’s National Public Health Centre (NKVC) reported on Tuesday.A person died of legionellosis in Vilnius on May 5, the NKVC confirmed.One of the biggest legionellosis outbreaks in recent years was recorded in the spring of 2023 in Kaunas District and the city of Kaunas where more than two dozen legionellosis cases were registered and seven people died.Legionellosis is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. Around one in ten people who contract the disease die. The bacteria are spread through water mist (aerosols), usually as a result of improperly maintained or constructed plumbing systems.
