Homicide detectives are searching for an unknown man after a woman and man were shot during an apparent burglary gone wrong on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.
Police were called to the property on Parson Street address in Rye about 4am.
Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said there appeared to be an altercation with a man and woman who attended the home shortly before the shooting.
9News understands the 29-year-old man living at the property was shot dead during the fight, along with the woman, who was believed to be an intruder.
The other alleged intruder, a man, fled the scene.
"The man who attended this property with the woman left before police attended," Stevenson said.
"Obviously we are seeking to locate the man. We are actively looking for that man.
"We don't know if a firearm is still outstanding... it's concerning for us."
Stevenson said they believe the pair were known to each other and it was "targeted".
She said the 29-year-old man was known to police.
Neighbours were shocked after hearing a "loud bang" and multiple gunshots this morning.
"I hear a sharp bang," Sophie told reporters.
"I've heard shotguns on TV and it sounded like that. There was one and then about 30 seconds there was another one and then that was it."
Part of the street has been taped off and an investigation is underway.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
