The UK is bracing for bone-chilling cold weather just a matter of hours into 2025, with weather maps turning icy blue and a brutal -9C Arctic blast hitting.Weather maps by WX Charts revealed cold weather sweeping in throughout the country on , with temperatures plummeting to as low as -9C in an area between Portree and Fort William at around 6am on Thursday (January 2).Elsewhere in Scotland, the mercury could plunge to -8C in the far north of the country and despite getting slightly warmer further south, it will still be extremely cold.Meanwhile, northern England could struggle to get above freezing with weather maps showing lows of -3C in an area between Manchester and Newcastle, and may only just nudge up a few degrees further south.
While the weather is reported to be widely cold between Thursday and Saturday, there are set to be a few sunny days with wintry showers mainly reaching coastal areas. The Met Office has, however, issued a yellow weather warning for various parts of the UK, including Glasglow, Newcastle and Stoke-on-Trent.The warning for January 1 states that heavy showers in Scotland will take place throughout the afternoon before rainfall moving over into the Northwest in the evening and the South through the early hours. The maps and Met Office also warned that snow is expected over high ground on the same day.Travelling in these conditions is not recommended, but if necessary, it is recommended to check road conditions before taking any journey and to give yourself extra time. The cold weather is expected to continue further into the new year, with a blend of snow, rain and strong winds targetting areas across the country, according to the Met Office's long range forecast.Between January 5 to January 14, it mentions "high pressure, cold air and wintry showers" that will impact regions across the north and northeast while rain, snow and strong winds are set to hit the south and southwest. It s weather report adds: "Overall, temperatures are more likely to be below normal than above, but day to day and regional variations are likely."
