Police are investigating after a child died in a caravan fire in north-central Victoria late on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Lake View Street in the small town of Boort, 250 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, about 5:50pm with reports a caravan had caught fire.
After extinguishing the blaze, fire crews found a deceased child inside.
Victoria Police said its arson and explosives squad had been notified, and that an arson chemist would attend the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
"Officers are aware of the impact that such a tragic incident has on family, community members and first responders and will ensure that welfare services are in place," police said in a statement.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
