Fire in built environment

An unresponsive man who was rescued from a fire in his Lynn apartment over the weekend died Monday, officials said.
Lynn firefighters responded to 104-106 Lewis St. around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday following a 911 call reporting smoke in the building, according to a statement from the state fire marshal’s office. Upon entry, they found fire in a third-floor apartment in the six-family building, where a man in his 40s was unresponsive.
The man, whose name has not been released, was transported to Salem Hospital and later to Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he died Monday afternoon.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Lynn Fire Chief Daniel Sullivan in the statement.
There were 40 residential fire deaths in Massachusetts in 2024, and smoke alarms were present and working in only 14 of them, officials said in the statement.
“Working smoke alarms on every level of your home are among the most effective tools for preventing injury or worse in a fire,” State Fire Marshal Davine said.
Though the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lynn Fire and Police Departments as well as State Police, no other residents in the building reported injuries.
“As sad as this incident is, working smoke alarms alerted other residents to the danger and may have prevented an even greater tragedy,” said Chief Sullivan. “Several residents are displaced due to smoke and water damage, but no other injuries were reported.”
