On Friday, an explosion took place in an apartment block in Vilnius Naujiniinkai district, leading to a partial collapse of the building's roof. No one was injured, the owner of the apartment was arrested by the police.
According to initial reports, the emergency services received the call at 11:43 from residents of the apartment building on Dzūkų Street.
The emergency services will have to survey the structure before allowing people to return. The people are now being housed temporarily in a nearby kindergarten.
Police Commissioner General Artūras Paulauskas said that the 32-year-old owner of the apartment where the explosion took place was arrested.
"Officers of the anti-terrorist operations team Aras arrived and carried out an initial inspection of the apartment. No explosive residue was found," Paulauskas said.
According to preliminary data, the explosion was caused by a gas leak. The police chief said on Friday afternoon that he could neither confirm nor deny whether it was a deliberate explosion.
"The initial data shows that the person is drunk. The owner of the apartment has not yet been questioned, officials will interview him as soon as they can," said Paulauskas.
The police have now opened a pre-trial investigation.
Last year, an explosion of a gas tank in an apartment caused part of a similar Soviet-era apartment block to collapse.
