AirAsia has clarified that there was no engine fire aboard flight AK128, which was forced to return to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 (T2) early on Thursday morning. The budget airline said that a technical issue in one of the Airbus A320 engines had triggered an abnormal indication."Upon inspection, it was found that the indication was caused by a damaged duct releasing hot air, necessitating the aircraft's return to the bay for rectification," AirAsia said in a statement today. The aircraft is expected to resume operations on March 31.Flight AK128, which departed KLIA T2 at 9.59pm on Wednesday en route to Shenzhen, encountered an abnormal engine indication approximately two hours into the flight.Following standard safety protocols, the pilots requested priority landing and safely touched down at KLIA T2 at 12:06am on Thursday.
All 171 passengers and six crew members disembarked safely and were accommodated on a replacement aircraft, which departed at 3:46am and arrived in Shenzhen at 7:51am.AirAsia Aviation Group's deputy group chief executive officer (Airline Operations), Datuk Captain Chester Voo, commended the swift actions of the flight crew.
"Our pilots and cabin crew are highly trained to manage such situations, and the aircraft landed safely without further incident after the necessary procedures were carried out," he said in a statement.
Voo expressed gratitude to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the Airport Fire and Rescue Services (AFRS), and relevant safety authorities for their prompt response and cooperation."We also thank our guests on flight AK128 for their understanding and patience. A replacement flight was promptly arranged to ensure their connection."
"Safety remains our top priority, and AirAsia is committed to upholding the highest safety standards to safeguard the well-being of our passengers and crew at all times," he added. In an earlier report, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said that emergency responders were dispatched after receiving a distress call at 10.37pm.Nine personnel and one fire engine from the department, along with three AFRS personnel and an additional fire engine, were deployed. No injuries were reported during the incident.
